Title: On p_T-broadening of high energy partons associated with the LPM effect in a finite-volume QCD medium
(Submitted on 2 Feb 2011 (this version), latest version 27 Sep 2011 (v2))
Abstract: We study the contributions associated with the LPM effect to p_T-broadening of a high energy parton traversing a QCD medium with a finite length L. The interaction between the parton and the medium is described by decorrelated static multiple scattering. Amplitudes of medium-induced gluon emission and self-energy diagrams are evaluated in the soft gluon limit in the BDMPS formalism. In terms of the transport coefficient qhat_R at leading order, p_T-broadening associated with the LPM effect is given by < p_{R T}^2 >_{rad} = alpha_s N_c qhat_R L log(qhat_A L^2/mu)^2/(4 pi) with the subscript R = F or A respectively for quarks or gluons. This logarithmic behavior holds as long as qhat_A L^2 is much larger than the screening mass mu. Therefore, in a medium with qhat_A L^2 much greater than mu, which is larger than Lambda_{QCD}, we expect a parametrically large correction to the medium-induced p_T-broadening in perturbative QCD from radiation.
