Title: Observation of novel superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16
(Submitted on 1 Apr 2014 (this version), latest version 16 Mar 2015 (v5))
Abstract: Finding novel superconductors and understanding their superconducting mechanism is one of the main themes in condensed matter physics. While many novel superconductors are quasi-two-dimensional, such as high-temperature cuprate superconductors and iron-based superconductors, the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) superconductors also attract great interests. For the rare Q1D superconductors (TMTSF)2X (X = PF6, ClO4) and Li0.9Mo6O17, however, their superconducting pairing symmetry and mechanism are still under hot debate. Here we report the observation of novel superconductivity in the newly discovered Q1D superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16, by ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements. The significant residual linear term k0/T in zero magnetic field and the rapid field dependence of k0/T clearly reveal nodes in the superconducting gap. Nodal superconductivity usually results from spin or charge fluctuations1. Without any sign of closing to a spin-density-wave or charge-density-wave order, Ta4Pd3Te16 may represent a new kind of novel superconductor.
