Title: Phosphorene nanoribbons
(Submitted on 21 Apr 2014 (this version), latest version 29 Aug 2014 (v3))
Abstract: Edge-induced gap states in finite phosphorene layers are examined using analytical models and density functional theory. The nature of such gap states depends on the direction of the cut. Armchair edges are found to introduce edge states which decay exponentially with the distance to the edge. Nanoribbons with this type of edge are insulating, whereas nanoribbons cut in the perpendicular direction (with zigzag and cliff-type edges) were found to be metallic. The gap states of the nanoribbons can be removed by hydrogen passivation.
