Title: Current in ideal and normal conductors
(Submitted on 3 Jun 2014 (v1), revised 11 Nov 2014 (this version, v2), latest version 30 Oct 2016 (v4))
Abstract: It is shown that current in a quantum many-body system can be represented by a number of distinct expectation values $J_p$, where $p$ denotes the number of particles in a charge carrying cluster. To each $J_p$ there corresponds a transport coefficient $D_p$. $D_p$ is finite if the reduced density matrix of order $p$ of the system commutes with the $p$-body momentum. The minimum $p$ for which $D_p$ is finite determines the nature of ideal conduction, and determines the flux quantization rule $\Phi_B=nhc/(pe)$ (for example, $p=2$ is a BCS state). The scheme is also extended to lattice systems, leading to a reinterpretation of conduction in many well-known strongly correlated models. Also, a flux quantization rule of the form $\int_0^{\Delta T} \Delta V(t) dt= -\Delta n \hspace{.1cm} h/(pe)$ is derived for Ohmic conductors.
