Title: Sub-Riemannian curvature of rank-two distributions
(Submitted on 24 May 2016 (this version), latest version 8 Feb 2017 (v4))
Abstract: The notion of curvature discussed in this paper is a far going generalization of the Riemannian sectional curvature. It was first introduced by Agrachev, Barilari and Rizzi in arXiv:1306.5318, and it is defined for a wide class of optimal control problems: a unified framework including geometric structures such as Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, Finsler, and sub-Finsler structures. In this work we study the generalized sectional curvature of the Goursat and Cartan groups. The Goursat group contains naturally the three-dimensional Heisenberg group, as well as the Engel group. For the Cartan group we show that its generalized sectional curvature is bounded from below by a first integral of the Hamiltonian system. Moreover, we study for geodesics in the Goursat and Cartan group the set of times of loss of equiregularity.
