Title: Optimal Monte Carlo integration on smooth compact manifolds
(Submitted on 15 Jul 2017 (v1), revised 28 Sep 2017 (this version, v3), latest version 24 Jan 2018 (v5))
Abstract: The worst case integration error in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of standard Monte Carlo methods with n random points decays as n^{-1/2}. Here, we improve on the performance by numerically customizing the weighting of the random points. For Sobolev spaces on compact Riemannian manifolds, we verify that such customization yields optimal approximation rates up to a logarithmic factor. We also provide numerical experiments matching the theoretical results for some Sobolev spaces on the sphere and on the Grassmannian manifold.
