Title: A proper choice of the Ising model order parameter
(Submitted on 13 Nov 2019 (this version), latest version 29 May 2020 (v3))
Abstract: L. D. Landau made a milestone contribution to the theory of phase transition introducing the concept of an order parameter. This distinguishes different phases by assuming non zero values in ordered states and vanishing when passing through a continuous phase transition. In ferromagnetic spin systems, the reasonable choice is the magnetization. In this work, we have exploited the existence of a second-order phase transition in the one-dimensional Ising model, by combining analytical calculations and high-precision entropic sampling simulations. To accomplish this, we chose a slightly different order parameter, namely the module of the magnetization. Notably, we detect a phase transition with a corresponding critical temperature around 15 K, which is in excellent agreement with experimental results. Our study indicates that an inappropriate choice of the order parameter may mask phase transitions in one-dimensional systems.
