Title: New structure canditates for the experimentally synthesized heptazine-based and triazine-based two dimensional graphic carbon nitride
(Submitted on 17 Feb 2020 (this version), latest version 25 May 2020 (v3))
Abstract: Based on first-principles calculations, the widely used flat P-6m2 structure for both heptazine-based and triazine-based two-dimensional graphic carbon nitride (g-C$_3$N$_4$) in computing chemistry and materials sciences is confirmed not the ground state configuration. We propose three new corrugated configurations P321, P3m1 and Pca21 with energies of about 65 meV/atom, 70 meV/atom and 74 meV/atom lower than that of the corresponding flat P-6m2, respectively. These three corrugated structure candidates and the flat P-6m2 possess very similar periodic pattern and they are difficult to be distinguished from their top-views. Their optimized thicknesses ranged in 1.347-3.142 {\AA} are good agreement with the experimental results. The first-principles results show that these corrugated structure candidates are also insulators with energy band gaps slightly larger than that of the flat P-6m2 and they are also possess suitable band alignment for sun-light-driven water-splitting at both $pH=0$ and $pH=7$ environment as the widely used P-6m2.
