Title: Surface-localized transmission eigenstates, super-resolution imaging and pseudo surface plasmon modes
(Submitted on 5 Mar 2020 (v1), revised 12 Aug 2020 (this version, v4), latest version 15 Dec 2020 (v7))
Abstract: We present the discovery of a novel and intriguing global geometric structure of the (interior) transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Helmholtz equation. It is shown that in two generic scenarios (depending on the refractive index of the inhomogeneous medium), there exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions with the corresponding eigenvalues going to infinity such that those eigenfunctions are localized around the boundary of the domain. The existence of such localized eigenstates is topologically robust against large deformation or even twisting of the material interface, while the eigenstates themselves are topologically sensitive to the material interface. We provide a comprehensive and rigorous justification in the case within the spherical geometry, whereas for the non-spherical case, we conduct extensive numerical experiments to quantitatively verify the localizing behaviours. Furthermore, we consider their applications in producing a super-resolution wave imaging scheme and generating the so-called pseudo surface plasmon resonant (PSPR) modes with a potential sensing application.
