Title: Modal Purcell factor in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric waveguides
(Submitted on 12 Mar 2020 (this version), latest version 1 Jul 2020 (v2))
Abstract: We review the spontaneous emission rate of a dipole emitter in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric environment of two coupled waveguides. First, we generalize a reciprocity approach to the case of non-orthogonal eigenmodes of non-Hermitian systems. Then, taking into account an emission to the guided modes, we define and calculate the modal Purcell factor composed of contributions of independent and interfering modes. We note that the interfering modes are not orthogonal. We reveal a huge enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate near an exceptional point of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric guiding structure related to the similar increase of the Petermann factor. We find out that the modal Purcell factor is huge, when the emitter is positioned in the lossy waveguide. Finally, we show that such an asymmetry is significant near the exceptional point and vanishes in the limits of small and great non-Hermiticity. Our results can be applied for a development of tunable absorption based devices on a chip from miniature dielectric absorbers, filters, energy harvesting devices to detectors with superior sensitivity.
