Title: Spectral gap formation to kinetic equations with soft potentials in torus
(Submitted on 3 May 2021 (v1), revised 4 May 2021 (this version, v2), latest version 19 Oct 2021 (v3))
Abstract: It has been a long history in kinetic theory to conjecture if the linearized Boltzmann or Landau equation for soft potentials admits a spectral gap in the spatially inhomogeneous setting. Most of existing works indicate a negative answer because the spectrum of the linearized collision operators must be accumulated to the origin in case of soft interactions. In the paper we rather prove the conjecture in an affirmative way when the space domain is a torus. The key strategy is to introduce a new Hilbert space weighted by an exponential function involving the inner product of space and velocity variables. The action of the transport operator on such weight function of phase variables induces an extra relaxation dissipation that is non-degenerate in large velocity and hence can be employed to compensate the degenerate dissipation of collision operators. As such, the spectral gap is recovered via the interplay between the collision operator and the transport operator in bounded domains and this hence provides a new insight of hypocoercivity in case of soft potentials.
