Title: Photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in the interacting Haldane model: targeting topological states with pump pulses
(Submitted on 5 May 2021 (this version), latest version 4 Sep 2021 (v2))
Abstract: By employing an unbiased numerical method, we investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of the spinless Haldane model with nearest-neighbor interactions on the honeycomb lattice. In this system, a well-known first order phase transition separates the Chern insulator (CI) from the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase at small and large interactions, respectively. Here we show that if adiabatically following the eigenstates across this level crossing, their Chern numbers are preserved, leading to the identification of a topologically-nontrivial low-energy excited state in the CDW regime. We then show that by promoting a resonant energy excitation via an ultrafast circularly polarized pump pulse, one can target the non-trivial excited state such as that the system acquires a non-vanishing Hall response as a result of the large overlap between the time-dependent wave-function and the topologically non-trivial excited state. This is suggestive of a photoinduced topological phase transition via unitary dynamics, in spite of the Chern number remaining invariant, and that it can be obtained through tuning the laser amplitude. We contrast these results with more common quench protocols, and such features are largely absent in the dynamics even if the post-quench Hamiltonian displays a topologically nontrivial ground-state.
