Title: Electron-Correlation Induced Enhancement of Atomic Diffusion in Liquid Metals
(Submitted on 8 May 2022 (this version), latest version 24 May 2022 (v2))
Abstract: We present a general theory for the atomic self-diffusion in the vicinity of a Mott metal-insulator transition in liquid metals. In terms of atomic dynamics, this electronic phase transition corresponds to a crossover from a liquid dominated by attractive interatomic interaction to one where the short-range repulsive force prevails. An partial cancelation between the two competing forces of opposite signs, facilitated by thermal fluctuations, gives rise to an intriguing maximum of diffusivity in this crossover regime. The proposed scenario, which is corroborated by the Chapman-Enskog theory and classical molecular dynamics simulations on an archetypal liquid model based on the Morse potential, provides a general mechanism for the enhancement of diffusion in simple liquids. Our work sheds new lights on the nontrivial effects of electron correlation on atomic dynamics.
