Title: On the second law of thermodynamics: an ideal-gas flow spontaneously induced by a locally nonchaotic energy barrier
(Submitted on 25 Jun 2022 (v1), last revised 21 Nov 2023 (this version, v5))
Abstract: In the current investigation, we show that the second law of thermodynamics cannot be applied to a large-sized ideal-gas model with a step-ramp structure: when the system is isolated, entropy can decrease; when in a thermal bath, the system can produce useful work by absorbing heat from a single thermal reservoir, without any other effect. The key concept is local nonchaoticity. Inside the ideal gas, there is a narrow energy barrier. The barrier width is much less than the nominal particle mean free path, so that in the barrier, particle-particle collision is sparse and the local particle trajectories tend to be nonchaotic. Across the barrier, the steady-state particle flux ratio is intrinsically in a non-Boltzmann form. Consequently, a global flow is spontaneously generated from the random thermal movement of particles. The deviation from thermodynamic equilibrium is steady and significant. Although counterintuitive, such a phenomenon is compatible with the basic principle of maximum entropy.
