Title: Memory effects from holonomies
(Submitted on 28 Jun 2022 (this version), latest version 4 Jun 2023 (v4))
Abstract: We show that known electromagnetic and gravitational memory effects can be formulated in terms of certain holonomies over suitable paths on a holographic screen in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In particular, the leading and subleading displacement memory effects correspond to `translational' holonomies, while the gyroscopic and spin memory effects are derived from `rotational' holonomies. Moreover, electromagnetic and gravitational kick memory effects correspond to spatial derivatives of the translational holonomy. The gravitational holonomy solves the parallel or `affine' transport equations, depending on an invariant of the Poincar\'e representation.
