Title: Mid-Infrared Conductivity from Mid-Gap States Associated with Charge Stripes
(Submitted on 28 Jun 2002 (this version), latest version 21 May 2003 (v3))
Abstract: The nature of the mid-infrared conductivity in stripe-ordered nickelates, such as La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4), has been controversial. Based on dc and optical conductivity measurements on the d=2/15 phase of La(2)NiO(4+d), we argue that the broad peak centered at 0.5--0.6 eV corresponds to electronic excitations into the mid-gap band of states associated with the charge stripes. Thermal excitation of electrons into the otherwise empty mid-gap states yields a Drude component. These results may be relevant to interpreting the optical conductivity of cuprates.
