Title: Electrostatic effects in DNA stretching
(Submitted on 5 Mar 2003 (this version), latest version 27 May 2006 (v3))
Abstract: We study theoretically the response of a semirigid polyelectrolyte to stretching in the regime of moderate screening, with a special focus on DNA. While the low-force behavior is consistent with the classical picture of electrostatically renormalized rigidity, a new physics appears for strong stretching. The response may have a pronounced two-stage character, with a peculiar intermediate regime in which the chain becomes nearly unstretchable even though it is not fully stretched. In this study, we were able to go beyond the linear Debye-Huckel (DH) approximation. In particular, it is explicitly demonstrated that DH result for effective rigidity may be recovered at the non-linear problem, upon a proper defnition of the effective charge.
