Title: Scaling of decoherence due to a spin-I bath
(Submitted on 3 Jun 2004 (this version), latest version 18 Jul 2005 (v3))
Abstract: A theory of multi-level spectral diffusion is formulated that allows determination of the scaling of spin-1/2 decoherence with increasing environment nuclear spin quantum number I. Large I implies multi-level mixing, which is seen to have important consequences for the motional narrowing regime, including a surprising reduction in coherence time of the central spin-1/2 as I increases. These results suggest that when a spinless environment is not possible, an I=1/2 environment is optimal for maintaining single spin-1/2 coherent evolution.
