Title: Phase equilibria and charge fractionation in polydisperse polyelectrolyte solutions

Abstract: The polydisperse polyelectrolyte solutions, i.e. those consisting of several types of charged macromolecules differing in their degree of ionization, are considered. We show that in this systems the competition between the tendency to segregation due to a short range polymer-solvent interaction and homogenization due to long range Coulomb interactions leads to a new type of phase separation. Namely, with the temperature decrease fractionation of the differently charged components occurs (first with no or a rather weak redistribution of counterions) much earlier than precipitation from the solution of the polyelectrolyte with the averaged degree of ionization, which would be accompanied by a considerable counterion redistribution. When the temperature decreases further, the charge fractionation results in a strong concentration of the weaker charged component still before the pure components phase separate themselves. Some implications of the charge fractionation for biological processes are discussed.
