Title: A simple spin model with nonequivalent microcanonical and canonical ensembles
(Submitted on 1 Apr 2005 (this version), latest version 24 Jan 2008 (v2))
Abstract: A simple spin model is proposed and its thermodynamic and equilibrium statistical properties calculated to show (i) that the microcanonical entropy can be a nonconcave function of the energy, and (ii) that the microcanonical and canonical ensembles can give nonequivalent predictions in the thermodynamic limit. The model considered is a simple variation of the free 1/2-spin model and is no more difficult to solve analytically than this last model. It may thus serves as a good example for undergraduate students to prove two results commonly not covered by statistical mechanics textbooks or deemed impossible by them. Various other connections between nonequivalent ensembles, phase transitions, and metastable states are also illustrated with this model.
