Title: Transport coefficients for a granular gas around uniform shear flow
(Submitted on 1 Jun 2005 (this version), latest version 9 Nov 2005 (v3))
Abstract: The inelastic Boltzmann equation for a granular gas is applied to spatially inhomogeneous states close to the (steady) uniform shear flow. The reference state (zeroth-order approximation) corresponds to the solution of the Boltzmann equation in the uniform shear flow problem, which in principle holds for arbitrary values of the coefficient of restitution. The velocity distribution function is evaluated to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the reference state. The corresponding set of transport coefficients are determined from linear integral equations which are approximately solved by using a kinetic model of the Boltzmann equation. As an application, a linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations with respect to the uniform shear flow state is carried out. Conditions for instabilities at long wavelengths are identified and discussed
