Title: Spin current across a tunnel junction driven by transverse electric fields
(Submitted on 1 Jun 2005 (this version), latest version 19 Sep 2006 (v2))
Abstract: The tunnelling current between two systems with substantial spin-orbit coupling is investigated. We predict a nonzero spin current, provided that the {\it direction of an external electric field} differs on each side of the tunnel junction. Thus, there will be spin transport across the junction in the absence of any magnetic fields or magnetic materials. Furthermore, the spin current is nonzero even if there is no voltage drop across the junction and thus no charge current. An experimental system where this should occur is two two-dimensional electron gases in tunnelling contact, where the two systems lie in different planes.
