Title: Abundance of Nanoclusters in a Molecular Beam: The Magic Numbers
(Submitted on 3 Jun 2005 (this version), latest version 28 Mar 2014 (v2))
Abstract: The known theory behind the abundance of experimentally observed nanoclusters produced in beams is described. It is shown how the use of statistical physics, with some additional assumptions, reduces the calculation of abundance to that of partition functions of single clusters. This way, one can understand the magic number behavior of some specific clusters. Methods to practically calculate these partition functions are introduced. As an illustration, we compute the abundance of Lennard-Jones clusters at low temperatures. It reveals their magic number behavior.
