Title: Statistics of Fourier Modes of Velocity and Vorticity in Turbulent Flows : Intermittency and Long-Ranged Correlations
(Submitted on 7 Jun 2005 (this version), latest version 16 Nov 2005 (v2))
Abstract: We perform a statistical analysis of experimental fully developed turbulence velocity data in the Fourier space. We show that the finite spectral resolution allows to characterize small scale intermittency. We derive a theoretical link between the behavior of velocity structure functions across scales and the flatness of Fourier modes thanks to a spectral analysis of cascade models. We also present the results obtained in an acoustical scattering experiment allowing the direct probing in time of spatial Fourier modes of the vorticity field. We show that vorticity is also long-ranged correlated and found more intermittent than velocity.
