Title: Competition between carboxylic and unsaturated termination for chemisorption on H:Si: a first-principles analysis
(Submitted on 28 Jul 2005 (this version), latest version 20 Apr 2006 (v2))
Abstract: We studied the possible competing configurations for surface chemisorption of bi-functional carboxylic acids (both saturated and unsaturated) on H:Si(100), using first-principles density-functional theory, for extended surface simulations. We are able to quantify the competition between the mechanisms, and show that the presence of a disordered layer in the case of carboxylic-alkene bifunctional molecules is possible, with both functionalities offered at the free surface; grafting through the alkyne tail is strongly favored compared to grafting through the carboxylic head, and we can expect the carboxylic head to dominate the free surface. A notable result is the extent of hybridization obtained for chemisorption through the carboxylic head in all cases and the identification of promising candidates for application in molecular electronics.
