Title: Frequency quenching of microwave induced resistance oscillations in a high mobility 2DEG
(Submitted on 3 Feb 2006 (this version), latest version 20 Nov 2007 (v2))
Abstract: In this work we address experimentally electrodynamics of microwave induced resistance oscillations (MIROs) by studying their frequency dependence. The study has been conducted on a high mobility 2DEG in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. It is found that at frequencies ~120 GHz the MIROs start to quench while above ~250 GHz they completely disappear. The results are discussed with a model in which plasmons play an intermediate role in the interaction process between the light and single particle electron excitations. The plasmons which are excited by microwaves decay through single particle excitations - electronic transitions between Landau levels involving a spatial displacement, the key component of existing theories for the origin of MIROs. The model also qualitatively explains other unexpected experimental results such as the independence of MIROs on the direction of the circular polarization and the absence of MIROs in absorption/reflection experiments.
