Title: Squeezing in the weakly interacting Bose condensate
(Submitted on 3 Feb 2006 (this version), latest version 15 Sep 2006 (v2))
Abstract: We investigate the presence of squeezing in the weakly repulsive uniform Bose gas, in both the condensate mode and in the nonzero opposite-momenta mode pairs, using two different variational formulations. We explore U(1) symmetry breaking and Goldstone's theorem in the context of a squeezed coherent variational wavefunction, and present the associated Ward identitiy. Squeezing of the condensate mode is proved to be strictly absent at the mean field Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov level. While condensate-mode squeezing is nonzero due to contributions from beyond mean field, it is shown to have no thermodynamic effects. The non-condensate pair-mode squeezing is given a physical interpretation in terms of density-phase variables using a second variational wavefunction based on a previous number-conserving formulation of the interacting Bose gas.
