Title: The Casimir Effect for Parallel Plates Revisited
(Submitted on 12 Nov 2006 (this version), latest version 28 Oct 2007 (v2))
Abstract: The Casimir effect for a massless scalar field with Dirichlet boundary conditions on infinite parallel plates is revisited. The energy per unit area is shown to be finite when surface renormalization counterterms, first considered by Symanzik, are added to the original Hamiltonian density. The same result is obtained by Hadamard regularization of the original energy density. The energy per unit area is also proved to be independent of the regularization for a class of regularizing functions. Finally, we formulate a general conjecture which points to a deep reason behind the results.
