Title: Spectral fluctuations and 1/f noise in the order-chaos transition regime
(Submitted on 3 Feb 2005 (this version), latest version 2 Aug 2005 (v2))
Abstract: Level fluctuations in quantum system have been used to characterize quantum chaos using random matrix models. Recently it was shown, using time series analogy, that level fluctuations inherently carry signatures of the underlying classical dynamics in the regular and chaotic limit. We show that quite generally the spectral transition accompanying regularity to chaotic dynamics displays characteristic $f^{-\gamma}$ noise, with $1 \le \gamma \le 2$. We demonstrate this using a smooth potential and a kicked system modeled by Gaussian and circular ensembles respectively of random matrix theory. We also discuss the effect of short periodic orbits on these fluctuation measures.
