Title: Quantum Embedding Method for the Simulation of Strongly Correlated Systems on Quantum Computers

Quantum computing has emerged as a promising platform for simulating strongly correlated systems in chemistry, for which the standard quantum chemistry methods are either qualitatively inaccurate or too expensive. However, due to the hardware limitations of the available noisy near-term quantum devices, their application is currently limited only to small chemical systems. One way for extending the range of applicability can be achieved within the quantum embedding approach. Herein, we employ the projection-based embedding method for combining the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, although not limited to, with density functional theory (DFT). The developed VQE-in-DFT method is then implemented efficiently on a real quantum device and employed for simulating the triple bond breaking process in butyronitrile. The results presented herein show that the developed method is a promising approach for simulating systems with a strongly correlated fragment on a quantum computer. The developments as well as the accompanying implementation will benefit many different chemical areas including the computer aided drug design as well as the study of metalloenzymes with a strongly correlated fragment.

Title: A probabilistic model of resistance jumps in memristive devices

Resistance switching memory cells such as electrochemical metallization cells and valence change mechanism cells have the potential to revolutionize information processing and storage. However, the creation of deterministic resistance switching devices is a challenging problem that is still open. At present, the modeling of resistance switching cells is dominantly based on deterministic models that fail to capture the cycle-to-cycle variability intrinsic to these devices. Herewith we introduce a state probability distribution function and associated integro-differential equation to describe the switching process consisting of a set of stochastic jumps. Numerical and analytical solutions of the equation have been found in two model cases. This work expands the toolbox of models available for resistance switching cells and related devices, and enables a rigorous description of intrinsic physical behavior not available in other models.

Title: Solving (Max) 3-SAT via Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization

We introduce a novel approach to translate arbitrary 3-SAT instances to Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) as they are used by quantum annealing (QA) or the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). Our approach requires fewer couplings and fewer physical qubits than the current state-of-the-art, which results in higher solution quality. We verified the practical applicability of the approach by testing it on a D-Wave quantum annealer.
