One can associate to a complex projective structure on a surface holomorphic quadratic differential $\Phi$ via the Schwarzian derivative and a bending lamination $\lambda$ via the Thurston parameterization. In this note we obtain upper bounds on the $L^2$-norm of $\Phi$ in terms of the length of $\lambda$. The proof uses the theory of $W$-volume introduced by Krasnov-Schlenker.

Let $S$ be a surface with $\chi (S) < 0$, and a representation $\rho : \pi_1 (S) \rightarrow \rm{SL} (2 , \mathbb{C})$. We define the \emph{trace systole} $\mathrm{tys} (\rho)$ as the infimum of $|\mathrm{tr} (\rho (\gamma)) |$ for $\gamma$ a simple closed curve. We know that this map is bounded on relative character varieties, and in this article we compute explicitly the optimal bounds for the one-holed torus, the four-holed sphere and the non-orientable surface of genus $3$, using results on generalized Markoff maps. From this, we infer various consequences on the optimal systolic inequalities of some hyperbolic manifolds and also informations on non-Fuchsian representations for certain surface groups.

Title: Algebraic structures among virtual singular braids

We show that the virtual singular braid monoid on $n$ strands embeds in a group $VSG_n$, which we call the virtual singular braid group on $n$ strands. The group $VSG_n$ contains a normal subgroup $VSPG_n$ of virtual singular pure braids. We show that $VSG_n$ is a semi-direct product of $VSPG_n$ and the symmetric group $S_n$. We provide a presentation for $VSPG_n$ via generators and relations. We also represent $VSPG_n$ as a semi-direct product of $n-1$ subgroups and study the structures of these subgroups. These results yield a normal form of words in the virtual singular braid group.

Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which two torsion elements in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ will have conjugates that generate a finite metacyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. This yields a complete solution to the problem of liftability of periodic mapping classes under finite cyclic covers. As applications of the main result, we show that $4g$ is a realizable upper bound on the order of a non-split metacyclic action on $S_g$ and this bound is realized by the action of a dicyclic group. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of the dicyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ up to a certain equivalence that we will call weak conjugacy. Furthermore, we show that every periodic mapping class in a non-split metacyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ is reducible. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which a non-split metacyclic action on $S_g$ factors via a split metacyclic action. Finally, we provide a complete classification of the weak conjugacy classes of the finite non-split metacyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_{10})$ and $\mathrm{Mod}(S_{11})$.

In this paper we present analogous exact sequences connecting the oriented and unoriented cobordism groups of maps with prescribed singularities. This gives positive answer to a fifteen-year-old question posed by Sz\H{u}cs and has interesting consequences even in the case of cobordisms of immersions.
