Title: On the existence of hysteresis in the Kuramoto model with bimodal frequency distributions
(Submitted on 23 Apr 2009 (this version), latest version 15 Oct 2009 (v2))
Abstract: We study the Kuramoto model with bimodal distributions of the natural frequencies. Previous studies have shown that the transition from incoherence to synchronization, as the coupling strength is increased, shows hysteresis for bimodal distributions with very close peaks. This conclusion stems from considering distributions with a sufficiently swallow central dip. In contrast, we consider here a a family of bimodal distributions with a central dip as narrow as wished. This entails the existence of a nonregular unimodal limit when the width of the dip goes to zero. In this limit hysteresis is absent. We present analytical and numerical results focusing on the nature of the phase transitions along the unimodal/bimodal border.
