Title: New insight into the formation of transparent carbon under pressure
(Submitted on 8 Mar 2010 (v1), revised 26 Aug 2010 (this version, v3), latest version 29 Sep 2010 (v4))
Abstract: A body-centered tetragonal carbon (bct-Carbon) allotrope is found to be a transparent carbon polymorph obtained under pressure. Its band gap energy is comparable to that of diamond, and its simulated X-ray diffraction pattern is in good agreement with experimental measurements. The structural transition pathways from graphite to diamond and from graphite to bct-Carbon are simulated and a lower activation barrier is found. Moreover, bct-Carbon has a shear strength that is higher than that of diamond. Our results provide a possible explanation for the formation of a novel carbon allotrope via the cold compression of graphite. We also verify that this allotrope is hard enough to crack diamond.
