Title: Tempering metastable vapor-liquid fluids: A pathway for crystal growing
(Submitted on 25 Oct 2010 (this version), latest version 1 Feb 2011 (v3))
Abstract: The metastable vapor-liquid coexistence of short-range attractive fluids hinders the formation of stable crystal nuclei, which in turn impedes the system to reach its vapor-solid ground state. In this letter we show that by imposing sudden and sufficiently large temperature changes crystal formation can be induced. This is carried out by combining the replica exchange Monte Carlo method and the standard slab technique. The obtained results suggest a pathway for crystal growing from the metastable liquid. This is particularly relevant for the crystallization of globular proteins.
