Title: Non-equilibrium version of the Einstein relation
(Submitted on 30 Apr 2014 (this version), latest version 18 Sep 2014 (v3))
Abstract: We argue that the celebrated Einstein relation between the diffusion coefficient $D$ and the drift velocity $v$ fails in non-equilibrium circumstances. We propose a generalized version, and analyze in detail the simplest example of Brownian motion in one dimension, taking into account the randomness and the asymmetry of the transition rates. Based on the non-equilibrium fluctuation theorem the $v/D$ ratio is found to be a non-linear function of the entropy production, that depends in a non-trivial way on the microscopics of the sample. In practice it is implied that $v/D$ transport measurements can be used in order to extract information on the underlying network.
