Title: Unfolding force definition and the unified model for the mean unfolding force dependence on the loading rate
(Submitted on 8 Apr 2019 (this version), latest version 14 Oct 2019 (v2))
Abstract: In single-molecule force spectroscopy experiments the mean unfolding force dependence on the loading rate is frequently used for obtaining information about the energetic and dynamic properties of the system under study. However, it is crucial to understand that different dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS) models are applicable in different regimes and that they might be using different definitions for the unfolding force. Here we discuss three definitions for the unfolding forces. We carried out Brownian dynamics simulations in order to demonstrate the difference between these definitions and compare DFS models. Importantly, we derive the mean unfolding force dependence for the whole range of the loading rates by unifying previously reported three DFS models. We have also obtained the exact result for the mean unfolding force dependence on the loading rate for the recently proposed heterogeneous DFS model.
