Title: Controlling correlation-driven electronic topology
(Submitted on 4 Jun 2019 (v1), revised 15 Mar 2021 (this version, v3), latest version 14 Apr 2021 (v4))
Abstract: Materials with nontrivial electronic topology hold great promise for next-generation quantum devices. In addition to a large and robust topological response, a key requirement is that the topological characteristics can be controlled. At focus so far have been weakly interacting topological materials [1]. Their broad bands have been instrumental to identify topological features by spectroscopic techniques [2,3]. However, because the energy scales at play are large, they are also difficult to influence. Here we demonstrate the control of topology in a strongly correlated electron system. We use magnetic field to manipulate Weyl nodes in a Weyl-Kondo semimetal [4-6], up to the point where they annihilate in a topological quantum phase transition. Our demonstration that the enhanced tunability of strongly correlated electron systems [7-10] holds also for topological properties lays the ground for a systematic exploration of correlation-driven topological phases and, ultimately, for technological exploitations of controlled electronic topology.
