Title: Relative density of St(n,H) in subsets connected by polynomial paths
(Submitted on 1 Jan 2021 (v1), revised 29 Jan 2022 (this version, v4), latest version 19 Jun 2023 (v6))
Abstract: If $H$ is a Hilbert space, the Stiefel manifold $St(n,H)$ is formed by all the independent $n$-tuples in $H$. In this article, we contribute to the topological study of Stiefel manifolds by proving a density-related result. We generalize the fact that $St(n,H)$ is dense in $H^n$ by proving that $St(n,H) \cap S$ is dense in $S$ whenever $S \subseteq H^n$ is connected by polynomial paths to some $\Theta \in St(n,H) \cap S$. We provide special examples of such sets $S$ in the context of finite-dimensional continuous frames (we set $H := L^2(X,\mu;\mathbb{F})$ and we identify $St(n,H)$ with $\mathcal{F}_{(X,\mu),n}^\mathbb{F}$) which are constructed from the inverse image of singletons by some familiar linear and pseudo-quadratic functions. As such, this article is also a contribution to the theory of finite-dimensional continuous Hilbert space frames.
