Title: A quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to calculate the free energy of a quantum system
(Submitted on 4 Jul 2002 (v1), revised 11 Jul 2002 (this version, v2), latest version 9 Dec 2002 (v3))
Abstract: We present a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for the calculation of the free energy and entropy of discrete quantum lattice models. The algorithm proceeds by stochastically evaluating the coefficients of a high temperature series expansion or a finite temperature perturbation expansion to arbitrary order. Similar to its classical counterpart, the Wang-Landau method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2050 (2001)], the algorithm is efficient at thermal as well as quantum phase transitions since it creates a flat histogram, albeit in the orders of the expansion instead of in energy space.
