Title: Configurational specific heat and relaxation length in supercooled liquids
(Submitted on 7 Feb 2004 (this version), latest version 27 Jul 2005 (v2))
Abstract: Identification of the configurational specific heat as the thermodynamic response function associated with the characteristic length of relaxation is proposed, and a semi-empirical description for thermal dependence of the relaxation length in supercooled liquids is presented. Key ingredients in this semi-empirical approach are the proposed identification of configurational specific heat as the thermodynamic response function corresponding to characteristic length of relaxation, and the temperature-dependent effective energy barrier against viscous flow that is embodied in the Vogel-Fulcher equation for the viscosity. Hence, through a semi-empirical determination of configurational specific heat in the supercooled temperature regime, we arrive at thermal variation of the relaxation length $\xi$, which is found to vary in accordance with $\xi \sim (T-T_0)^{-\nu}$ where, $T_0$ is the Vogel-Fulcher temperature and exponent $\nu$ equals unity. This result is in good agreement with, and hence, lends further support to some of the earlier theoretical work that suggest a power-law temperature variation for $\xi$.
