Title: Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Study of Exciton Properties in a Small Organic Molecule
(Submitted on 31 Jul 2006 (this version), latest version 22 Feb 2007 (v2))
Abstract: Excitons in a complex organic molecular crystal were studied by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) for the first time. The dynamic dielectric function is revealed over a large momentum transfer region, and an exciton dispersion of 130meV is observed. Our results show that IXS is a powerful tool for studying excitons in small organic molecules. Besides the energy position, the IXS spectra provide additional stringent tests on the validity of the theoretically calculated exciton wavefunctions. The semiempirical quantum chemical calculations can well reproduce the momentum dependence of the measured dynamic dielectric responses, and thus reliably reveal that the lowest Frenkel exciton is confined within a fraction of the complex molecule.
