Title: Effect of magnetic ordering on triplet Haldane excitations in Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5
(Submitted on 1 Oct 1997 (this version), latest version 9 Mar 1998 (v2))
Abstract: The mixed rare earth and transition metal antiferromagnet Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5 is studied by single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering. The triplet of the Haldane gap excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional Ni^2+ spin subsystem is directly observed in this compound for the first time. All three components of the Haldane triplet, including the longitudinal mode, survive as distinct underdamped modes in the magnetically ordered phase. Below the Neel temperature gaps acquire a strong temperature dependence and their degeneracy is lifted. In agreement with recent theoretical predictions the longitudinal gap increases with decreasing temperature roughly twice as fast as the transverse ones.
