Title: Large deviations and nontrivial exponents in coarsening systems
(Submitted on 15 Dec 1997 (this version), latest version 24 Dec 1997 (v2))
Abstract: We investigate the statistics of large deviations and of persistent large deviations in simple coarsening systems. The probabilities of these events have nontrivial behaviour, including algebraic decay, with a continuous dependence of the exponent with the level of large deviations. We consider more specifically the case of the diffusion equation, of the Ising chain at zero temperature and of the two dimensional voter model. Evidence for the existence of algebraic decay is provided by analytical arguments and numerical computations. The statistics of large deviations for the diffusion equation is studied analytically, using the independent interval approximation.
