Title: A general approach to physical realization of unambiguous quantum states discrimination
(Submitted on 7 Mar 2006 (this version), latest version 5 Jul 2006 (v2))
Abstract: We present a general scheme to realize the POVMs for the unambiguous discrimination of quantum states (pure or mixed). If any set of pure states are prepared as the linear combinations of single-photon states in $N$ dimensional Hilbert space and the POVM to unambiguously distinguish between them has been determined, a device to perform the task can be set up with at most $N^2$ lossless beam splitters and reaches the optimal performance if we choose the proper parameters for these beam splitters. This scheme is also practical in the physical realization of all possible finite linear maps on quantum states, represented by $M\times N$ matrices. An example of unknown states discrimination is discussed as the illustration of the general scheme.
