Title: The Effect of Vane-in-Cup Gap Width on Creep Testing of Strongly-Flocculated Suspensions
(Submitted on 1 Aug 2014 (this version), latest version 23 Jan 2015 (v2))
Abstract: The measurement of yielding is cohesive suspensions using rotational rheometers is often complicated by artefacts like slip and jamming. This paper presents creep testing data for strongly-flocculated suspensions obtained using vane-in-cup tools with differing cup-to-vane diameter ratios. The tests suspensions were either aq. titania or alumina aggregated at their isoelectric points, or polymer-flocculated aq. alumina. The aim was to find the ratio where slip or premature yielding at the cup wall had no effect on the transient behaviour. The wide gap results showed readily understandable material behaviour comprising linear viscoelasticity at low stresses, followed by strain-softening close to yield, then time-dependent yield over a small range of stresses and then, finally, viscous flow. Tests in narrow gaps however showed more a complex response composed of retarded elasticity, slip, multiple yielding and stick-slip events, followed by unsteady flow. The conclusion was the walls of the cylindrical cup have to be very remote in order to eliminate wall artefacts. A diameter ratio of three or more was found to be sufficient in practice, although the miminum ratio has to be material-dependent, strictly-speaking, since it is given by the square-root of the ratio of wall (adhesive) to bulk (cohesive) yield stresses.
