Title: Is the Molecular Weight Dependence of the Glass Transition Temperature Caused by a Chain End Effect?
(Submitted on 27 Mar 2023 (this version), latest version 5 Feb 2024 (v4))
Abstract: For almost 70 years, the pronounced dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) on molecular size has been understood as resulting from enhanced mobility and free volume of chain ends, combined with a simple dilution effect as chain length increases. Here we report on findings from molecular dynamics simulations demonstrating that this proposed mechanism is inconsistent with local dynamics and free volume behavior in multiple model polymers. Results indicate that free volume is not universally enhanced at the chain end; moreover, we find that chain end mobility enhancements are far too weak to account for the trend in Tg with varying molecular weight. Instead, results support a scenario wherein this trend is driven by a molecular size dependence of intramolecular correlations and barriers - an effect already present at temperatures far above the glass formation range.
