Title: From flocking to glassiness in dense disordered polar Active Matter
(Submitted on 31 May 2022 (v1), revised 27 Sep 2023 (this version, v2), latest version 23 Jan 2024 (v3))
Abstract: We study dense systems of poly-disperse self-propelled disks, considering only leading interactions between them: excluded volume and a minimal alignment rule. We show that at very high packing fractions, in a regime where the active system can be considered incompressible, the emergence of polar order (or flocking) displays the typical features of continuous phase transitions. Beyond the onset of flocking, the velocity correlation function develops isotropic long-range order, and the collective properties of the system are well described by scaling laws that bind the two independent critical exponents. Decreasing the density below a threshold value, the transition becomes discontinuous as particles arrange into traveling dense bands. Besides causing collective motion, we report the observation of a novel glass transition triggered by alignment interactions, as we find reentrant glassy dynamics upon increasing the alignment strength. While moderate alignment drives the melting of the active glass, large alignment freezes particle displacements, enhancing the dynamical slowing down of the polar phase at high densities. Finally, we observe that polar order destroys active phase separation, producing homogeneous, disordered moving configurations.
